NEW Bike Trail in Brevard, North Carolina

bracken mountainFor all you mountain-bike enthusiasts – Brevard has just opened the new Bracken Mountain trail!

Ribbon-cutting was held July 27 to officially open the the 7.1 miles of new trails. Bracken Mountain trail is located next to the Brevard Music Center off of Pinnacle Road, just a hop, skip and wheelie ride from downtown. It is sure to give you a thrill and maybe even a bit of air! The shorter loops are perfect for a quick ride, however when you need a day of biking, the longer trails will give you a bigger challenge, not only on Bracken Mountain but even on up to the Fish Hatchery in Pisgah National Forest. That’s right, the trails on Bracken Mountain lead directly to the forest for even more biking/hiking/walking/stumbling adventure!

The 400-acre tract called Bracken Mountain was purchased in the early 1900’s by the city of Brevard for their water supply. The city of Brevard chose to preserve the land for public recreational activities and early 2012 brought volunteers to begin clearing the trail. Over 75 volunteers helped to create this playground on Bracken Mountain.

Locals are already enjoying the trail and saying great things about the experience. Check out http://brackenmountain.com or just get your fanny-pack out to Bracken Mountain to have your own adventure!

Best swimming holes across the USA

Break out your old cutoff jeans shorts for this 60-foot natural waterslide just off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville. Each minute 11,000 gallons of water pour over a huge, mostly smooth boulder and into a seven-foot plunge pool. If the ride doesn’t take your breath away, the water temperature will. The cool mountain stream that powers this Sliding Rock ride is only about 50 to 60 degrees in summer. Sliders of all ages shriek, grimace, and tiptoe through it but come back for more, even when long lines snake down the entire rock face. Lifeguards supervise in summer, and small kids can ride in an adult’s lap.

What’s Nearby: To see an authentic slice of Appalachia, check out Brevard, which was named one of America’s Coolest Small Towns by Budget Travel magazine in 2010. The woods and waterfalls of DuPont State Recreational Forest were the film set for the arena in The Hunger Games.
