It may have been the rainiest summer season we’ve ever seen but it has also been the coolest. Summer temps have mainly been in the 70’s and low 80’s. It’s a beautiful day here in Brevard and a very hectic weekend with Brevard Music Center parents picking up their talented children to take them home from music camp, many other summer camps coming and going and families trying to squeeze in a vacation before school starts.
Yes, it’s true. The 55 year-old retro palace has been renovated, updated, gyrated and this owner is motivated and dedicated to making this little ole’ motor lodge boutique a thing of wonder. (What the heck was she thinking when she put all those flamingoes in the front lawn??!)
On April 9th at 4:30pm, the ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place on the front lawn (with the mingo herd as witness) followed by a Chamber Of Commerce party from 5:30-7pm (6pm surprise) where much silliness will prevail. Other local retro businesses will be on hand to add to the festivities; real bowling (Rockin’ Bowl), great food and an ice-cream float making counter and photo ops with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Jimmy Dean (Rocky’s). Cameron Austin and his band will don their Blues Brothers attire and entertain while the wine & beer sipping crowd is surrounded by antique 50’s cars (Jerry Arnold & friends) and, of course, we’ll have some renovated guest rooms open for your viewing pleasure.
The public is invited for quick tours from 4:30-5:15pm.
I’d like to offer a huge thanks to my tremendously talented event planner and good friend Leigh Trapp and to business maven and friend Dee Dee Perkins for co-hosting this event and providing all the wonderful edibles. I could not have done this without you both.

Yes, it’s true. This hot new toy is being presold for only $69.99 for delivery starting July 2013. What is it? A revolutionary sophisticated gadget called Automatic Link that marries your smartphone (Droid/IPhone) to your car’s data port! The device talks to your car’s onboard computer and uses your smartphone’s GPS and data plan to upgrade your car’s capabilities. Automatic works with just about any gasoline engine car sold in the United States since 1996. Read more below…………..
Worried about a break-down on the road? Fab new gadget keeps you in-tune with your ride!
It’s got the “OMG!-I’ve-wrecked-who’s-gonna-call-the-ambulance-and-my-momma?” wow factor
The Automatic Link has a built-in accelerometer than can detect crashes. It uses your phone’s data connection to report your crash to 911 with your name, location and vehicle description. Then, wait for it…….once help responds, this crazy thing can send a text message to your kin to let them know what happened, where you are and that help is a-comin’. (I’m betting in a year, this thing will also be able to order you a pizza while you wait for the body wagon!)
What else do it do that like you will?
Well, for one thing, it will tell you where you parked your TransCamero when you come out of the mall so you don’t look pathetic wandering around with your car clicker!
Also, Automatic learns about your driving style and gives you subtle audio cues when you do things that waste gas, like: rough braking, speeding and rapid acceleration. (I’m hoping it says something that will really break through the clutter of computer-voiced-over devices with something like “Yo, Idiot! Stop riding the brake with your left foot! We know that God gave you two feet but he meant for you to use one for the gas pedal and the other one to use to kick yourself upside the head for driving like a #!!#$@%!)
It will also tell you when something is amiss under the hood and stuff. I’m imagining a message like “There is the very slighest of leaks in your brake fluid but don’t panic. There is a long narrow field at the bottom of the hill you are currently approaching Mach1 on so you should be able to stop before you fly over the cliff beyond the field if you don’t catch a tail wind.”
After this, I know you want one for when you next travel to Brevard to stay at The Sunset Motel so click here Automatic Link and arrive at our front door in one piece.
Disclaimer – some of the facts were taken directly off of the Automatic Link site. The conjecture and projections and dreams for the product are solely the product of my own warped mind.
Happy Retro Travel,
This year’s Swank 65 Mountain Bike Race, sponsored by Sycamore Cycles, will take place Sunday, November 11. Not for the faint of heart, Swank is mountain biking at its most primeval, far removed from civilization and polluted air.
The race begins at 2500 feet, and consists of a triad of cloverleaf shaped loops winding around Gloucester Gap in Pisgah National Forest. Rolling over rugged mining roads, fun single track, tough climbs and hell-raising descents, the exhilarating course will test your skills and desire as you explore the devilish terrain of the Pisgah National Forest.
Though all race spots have already been filled, Blue Ridge Adventures has created a convenient discussion forum where riders can buy, sale, or trade entries. Interested riders check here.
As always, the Sunset Motel is the premier lodging destination for riders and features a convenient bike wash for guests.
On Sunday, March 11 singer/songwriter Shannon Whitworth will perform at the Porter Center on Brevard College’s campus in a benefit concert that will support the fundraising efforts for the Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS). This community volunteer group is raising money to bridge the gap between the public money committed by Transylvania County and the cost to build the long awaited new animal shelter on Ross Rd off Highway 64.
Shannon, an animal lover and resident of Transylvania County, in conjunction with Mountain Song Productions are graciously working together to bring this event to the Porter Center.
This concert will feature Shannon’s full band. There will be a pre-party in the lobby of the Porter Center starting at 6pm where wine, beer and other refreshments will be served.
There will be a raffle for a personal pet portrait painted and donated by a very talented local artist, Theresa Reuter.
Tickets may be purchased at Rockin Robin Records or click here to purchase tickets online. They are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Lori Roberts has just recently purchased The Sunset Motel located in Brevard, North Carolina. This quaint, retro motel, reminiscent of the 50’s is a must-see when passing through Brevard. When you first drive in you are transported back in time and expect the staff to be sporting beehive hairdos and all the fixin’s.
Lori, has made some major improvements and will be continuing to update the charming motel throughout the season. She says business is booming and she has been running at a high occupancy rate since she has taken over the motel so reserve your room early.
The Sunset Motel is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Brevard and minutes away from Pisgah National Forest and multitudes of other natural attractions. The motel is very reasonably priced, and a great place to stay if you are looking for ambiance. Stop by and say “Hi” to Lori and her team, they would love to see you.
